Background: This sculpture represents a syringe superimposed on a pair of eye glasses. On East Hastings Street in Vancouver I saw a junkie sitting on the foot path injecting heroin into his arm. I was totally horrified and saddened that there were people wasting their lives as pan handlers and junkies especially when they lived in such a beautiful place as Vancouver.
The stone used for this carving is black jade from Australia. Here black is a symbol for the darkness that drug habits bring. This stone is also strong enough to enable the thinness this design requires.
